There’s nothing quite like relaxing on your porch after a long day at the office and (or) managing your kids.
Except when you spot a big, fat possum crawling out from under your porch, where it’s been feasting on crumbs and bits of hot dogs that fell through the floor’s slats.
Yup, that probably pregnant possum scooted out from our porch post-snack and headed up the hill to our neighbor’s yard.
So when I gave our small screened-in porch a makeover, I knew we needed an outdoor rug that would cover most of the floor.
Turns out, the right rug was quite literally under my feet, in our dining room.
Outdoor rugs are perfect for high-traffic, high-mess areas like kitchens and dining rooms, and although it was working well, our dining room was ready for a change.
After vacuuming and cleaning the rug (more on that later in this post), we pulled it out to our porch and added colorful accessories to create a cheerful outdoor room.
I love how this bold, blue rug looks in our screened-in porch, and challenge you to add impact to your porch or patio with one of these colorful outdoor rugs!

How to Clean Your Outdoor Rug
If you have kids or pets, you know that food’s gonna land on the floor. Turn off your vacuum’s rotating brush to remove crumbs and other dry, basic messes from your outdoor rug.
Sometimes, yuckier stuff ends up on the floor, but luckily outdoor area rugs (and those labeled indoor/outdoor) can handle nasty messes.
When our outdoor rug lived indoors in the dining room, our dog pooped on it a few times, and each time was nastier than the one before. Luckily, it was pretty easy to clean up with a scrub brush and a bucket of warm water mixed with a little dish soap.
Before we moved the rug out to the porch, we took it out to the driveway and used my dad’s power washer to clean away every last crumb and all evidence of doggy messes. This method also works well to get rid of dirt and mildew.
Although our porch is covered, we roll up the rug and store it in the garage during the winter months to keep it away from the worst weather. We’ve had our rug for several years, and it’s held up great.
