“Expecto Patronum!” yells my four-year-old daughter while waving a chopstick at her seven-year-old brother.
“Expelliarmus!” he cries back, as she tosses her wand/chopstick to the ground.
This is just another Saturday afternoon at my house, while my kiddos watch one of the Harry Potter movies for the millionth time.
So, it was no surprise that my son wanted a Harry Potter themed party for his birthday this year.
Well, he wanted a Star Wars birthday at a bouncy-house party place, and Harry Potter party favors. Because why celebrate with just one theme when you love so many?
It was surprisingly easy and inexpensive to buy and make homemade Harry Potter party favors that my kids and my son’s friends loved. I even got an email from one of the moms telling me she loved the favors.
Here’s how to put together a cute Harry Potter party favor bag that’s perfect for a birthday party or trick-or-treating on Halloween.

1. DIY Chocolate Frogs
At around $4, “official” Harry Potter chocolate frogs are way too expensive to include in a party favor bag, so I made my own! The kids loved them and I saved a lot of money by making them at home. You can also serve them as part of your Harry Potter themed party food.
Here’s how to make DIY chocolate frogs. You’ll need:
Simply follow the directions on the candy melt package, and store the chocolate frogs in a cool, dark spot until you’re ready to distribute them.

2. Slytherin Snakes
An errand to my local drug store led to my invention of “Slytherin Snakes”, which are just Haribo Gummi Candy Twin Snakes found in the candy aisle and purchased with a coupon. While not an official candy from the wizarding world’s Honeyduke’s sweet shop, they’re a fun and cheap Harry Potter party favor.
3. Quidditch Broom Pens
Homework will be much more fun with broom pens, an inexpensive Harry Potter party favor at around $0.66 each.
4. Printable Harry, Hermione, and Dumbledore Bookmarks
Kids can save their page in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with these cute (and free) printable bookmarks from Not Quite Susie Homemaker. I printed them on white cardstock, laminated them with self-laminating sheets, then added a little black ribbon.
