All you need are thirty minutes and a few basic crafts supplies to make these easy DIY Valentine’s Day mantel decorations! Learn how to make three simple Valentine’s crafts in today’s tutorial.
When it comes to holiday decorating, there are three (well, at least three) possible reactions people have to the idea:
- Woo-hoo! It’s the day after Christmas, so let’s bust out the pink and red hearts!
- Oh, crap! Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and there’s still Christmas garland on my mantel!
- Meh, I’m not crafty enough to make my own decorations and don’t have the time or money to spend on any this year.
Which reaction best represents you?
I usually end up around #2. 🙂
By the time you finally put away the last of the Christmas decorations, Target already had Valentine’s Day decor on the shelves, tempting you every time you went in to buy a roll of paper towels.
But you don’t need to buy all the things, or be particularly creative, or spend a lot of time to make Valentine’s Day mantel decorations that are simple and cute. Here are three crazy-simple crafts that will take you hardly any time at all:
- Felt heart garland
- Dressed-up candle holders
- Framed heart art

1. Easy DIY Heart Garland
This cute heart garland is easy to make with pre-cut felt hearts, fishing line, and a hole puncher.
First, punch a hole on one side of the heart near the top like this:
Next, fold the heart in half and use your first hole as a guide to punch the second hole.
After you’ve punched holes in one felt heart, you can use it as a template for punching holes in the rest of the hearts. Since the felt is thick, go one heart at a time.
Lastly, tie a loop on one end of the fishing line and weave it through your felt hearts before tying a final loop on the other end.
Now, you have super cute and colorful Valentine’s Day garland, but keep up your crafting momentum! You still have time to decorate a candle holder and make some artwork.

The wood heart was a Target Dollar Spot find. Here’s a similar one you can paint.
2. Valentine’s Day Candle
A little washi tape and candy conversation hearts are all you need to dress up a plain candle holder, plus both are easy to remove. Wrap the tape around the top and bottom of the candle holder, and fill the space between the candle and glass with candy conversation hearts.

The tape is another Target Dollar Spot find, but this one is similar.
3. Quick Valentine’s Day Artwork
You don’t need any artistic skill to create this Valentine’s Day art, just a few cheap supplies:
- Pre-cut paper hearts
- Scrapbook paper
- Washi tape (I like this skinny glitter tape)
- Double-sided tape
- Picture frame
Decorate the heart with coordinating washi tapes by sticking strips on the heart at random. Then, use double-sided tape to attach the heart to the scrapbook paper and cut the scrapbook paper to fit inside your frame.
Voila! Now you have Valentine’s Day artwork and a cute candle!
