The Easiest Way to Make DIY Watercolor Art (In Just 30 Seconds!)

May 6, 2016 by Laura Kiernan 2 Comments

It’s never been easier to make your own gorgeous artwork, even if you don’t have any artistic skills. Learn how to create DIY watercolor art in just a few seconds. You’ll be amazed by how pretty it looks!

When I was little, my grandma took a watercolor painting class. I loved the pretty beach scene that resulted from her efforts and admired her willingness to try something new even in her eighties.

As a busy mom, there’s just no time to take an art class – but there’s enough time to create easy watercolor art with the one item we all have.

The Only Supply You Need for DIY Watercolor Art

The trick to making cool watercolor paintings is an app for your phone called Waterlogue. Waterlogue transforms your photos into lovely watercolor art with just a tap on your phone.

I downloaded the app right from iTunes, but it also works with Windows 10 and costs $3.99. That’s a small price to pay to create your own DIY watercolor art whenever you want to.

How to Create Your Own Watercolor Art with Waterlogue

Step 1: Choose a Photo

After you download and open up Waterlogue, you have the option to upload a photo from your library or take a photo right from the app (similar to Instagram). In this example, I used a photo I took of some pretty grocery store flowers that I recently shared on Instagram.

Step 2: Choose a Style

After you select your photo, choose from a variety of styles and the app will show you a little preview of what your new DIY watercolor art will look like. First, I tried the “Vibrant” option:

The look is pretty, but the flowers really lost their detail. Let’s try the “Bold” option instead:

Aha! That’s better. The colors are gorgeously bright, and we can see a bit more detail.

Step 3: Save and Share Your Watercolor Art

Lastly, press the little <heart> button to save the image back to your phone, email it, or share your pretty DIY watercolor art on your preferred social network.

Easy Watercolor Art in Seconds!

Isn’t it so simple? Although Waterlogue is a paid app, it’s a small price to pay for unique watercolor art made from your very own photos, and the possibilities are endless. From photos of your kids and pets to your favorite vacation photo, there are plenty of opportunities to make some amazing art for your home with this little trick.

Thanks for this creative tip. I propose trying to take it one step further by using the Waterlogue image to paint our own watercolor pieces. I love watercolor painting, and this would be a great guide to use.

Good idea – an inspiration piece! Maybe I should try it out with my son’s little watercolor paint set. 🙂
